An Early Passion
From the tender age of 5, Kendrik McKinney was introduced to the intricate world of classical piano. Born into a musical legacy with both parents being jazz musicians and educators, Kendrik's childhood was filled with the vibrant melodies and rhythms of jazz.
Musical Influences
Growing up in such a rich musical environment, Kendrik developed a diverse palate of musical influences. His eclectic inspirations range from the jazz giants like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, and Bill Evans to the soulful sounds of Prince, Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo, and Erykah Badu. Not just restricted to jazz and soul, Kendrik also found inspiration in artists like George Clinton and Parliament, Hank Williams Jr., and many others, showcasing his vast and versatile musical appreciation.
Touring, Recording, and Performing
Kendrik's talent has taken him across the United States, recording and performing with numerous artists and bands. His stint with the soulful Matt Stansberry and the Romance and Nashville's Bryce Merritt stands testament to his adaptability and prowess as a musician. With a keen expertise in the Hammond B3 Organ, Kendrik's skills are often sought after by many artists. His significant presence was noted on the PBS Sun Session documentary, which aired nationally.
Sharing the Stage
Throughout his illustrious career, Kendrik has had the honor of sharing the stage with luminaries such as John Daversa, Terrance Blanchard, Wayne Newton, and The Drifters, among many others. His talent shone brightly during the 2018 Monterey Jazz Festival and as the Music Director for iconic tribute events.
Jazz Event Promoter
In addition to performing, Kendrik is a prolific jazz event promoter in Oklahoma City. He can be seen gracing stages across the city 3-4 nights a week, elevating the local jazz scene.
Back Home in Oklahoma City
Presently, Kendrik graces the stages of Oklahoma City, collaborating with a myriad of artists and projects. However, his eyes are set on the horizon as he plans to immerse himself in Jazz Arranging at The University of Miami.
Beyond the Keys
When he's not weaving magic with his keys, Kendrik enjoys the greens, indulging in golf, and spending quality time traveling. Grounded by his family, Kendrik finds joy, discipline, and inspiration from his wife and two daughters.
