Two Roads, One Passion: Garrett "Big G" Jacobson's Fusion of Jazz and Blues

As the keys dance under the deft fingers of Garrett "Big G" Jacobson, listeners are privy to a masterclass in both blues and jazz, genres that Jacobson has been resonating with since his tender years. His musical journey is nothing short of fascinating, and his mastery over different instruments speaks volumes about his versatility.

Childhood Beginnings

At the young age of seven, Jacobson was introduced to the world of music through classical piano. Yet, even as he studied these classical notes, the allure of blues records pulled him in, teaching him the soulful chords of this deeply emotive genre. His pivotal moment came at the age of nine when he met Oklahoma's blues legend, D.C. Minner, at a summer arts workshop. Little did he know that this meeting would shape his future. By the time he was 12, he was playing the guitar for Minner’s band.

Rising in Ranks

Taking his newfound passion to the next level, 14-year-old Jacobson started his blues band, marking his debut with the album "Rhythm Attack." Over the years, the Garrett "Big G" Jacobson Band stamped their presence across major venues like the Chicago Blues Festival, Buddy Guy’s Legends, and B.B. King’s Blues Club.

His professional journey saw him share the stage with blues luminaries like Jimmy Johnson, Carl Weathersby, and Smokey Wilson. The nickname "Big G" – courtesy of Minner – aptly captured his larger-than-life presence, both in stature and in the musical world.

The Jazz Transition

While blues was his first love, jazz wasn't far behind. Introduced to it in high school with the University of Central Oklahoma’s jazz ensembles, his passion for it grew exponentially. His third album, "Soul Buffet," aptly captured this dual love, with a mix of blues guitar and jazz organ tracks.

In college, where he pursued and attained a Master’s in music, his jazz journey deepened. This phase saw him not just playing but composing and arranging, culminating in his latest jazz recording, "Without Notice."

Educating the Next Generation

With over two decades of performance experience, Jacobson transitioned into teaching in 2018 at Larsen Music Company. Today, he holds the esteemed position of Jazz Piano Professor at the University of Central Oklahoma. But for Jacobson, teaching isn't just about the notes; it's about critical listening, emotive playing, and nurturing a distinct musical voice.

Legacy and Beyond

Having released six critically acclaimed albums and been mentioned in notable publications like Living Blues and Southwest Blues, Jacobson's footprint in the world of blues and jazz is undeniable. Whether it's the classical notes from his childhood or the rich chords of the blues guitar and the mesmerizing tunes of the jazz piano, his music is a testament to a life devoted to musical excellence.

In the world of blues and jazz, few have traversed the journey as Garrett "Big G" Jacobson has, making him not just a musician but a living legend.

Learn more about Garrett at his website.  Garrett will be playing this Saturday, October 21st at the UCO Jazz Lab with Lee Rucker, Vince Norman, Rei Wang Bowen, and David Bowen.  Tickets can be bought here.
