Oklahoma City has produced phenomenal jazz talent, but few shine as brightly as saxophonist Vince Norman. His journey through jazz flows from a rich family legacy and over 35 years spent shaping the sound of the Jazz Ambassadors “America's Big Band.”

Inheriting the Jazz Gene
Born into a musical family, Vince is the son of legendary saxophonist Ray Norman, who performed with jazz greats like Claude Thornhill and Charlie Barnett. Surrounded by music, Vince gravitated to the saxophone, mentored by his junior high band director Paul Brewer. In high school, Vince played his first gig with the Rick Swyden Big Band, initiating a lifelong passion for jazz.
From Local Stages to the World
A native of Del City, Oklahoma, Vince headed east as a young man to hone his craft in Washington D.C. He excelled as a freelance musician while also joining The U.S. Army Field Band as Lead Tenor for the Jazz Ambassadors. For over 35 years, Vince shaped the band's sound from within and without through his virtuosic playing and imaginative arrangements.
His career flourished on the global stage through tours across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. He collaborated with jazz royalty including Arturo Sandoval, Clark Terry, and Marvin Hamlisch while conquering landmarks like Carnegie Hall.

Winning a Latin Grammy
A highlight was winning the 2008 Latin Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album for his work with the Afro Bop Alliance Big Band. This demonstrated his mastery blending bebop and Afro-Cuban jazz.
Breadth of Compositional Work
Beyond performing, Vince prolifically composes jazz works for ensembles and artists. His arrangements for the Cannonball Music's Cannonball Band have accumulated millions of online views. He's also composed pieces for the Capitol Saxophone Quartet and the New York Afro Bop Alliance Big Band, blending bebop with Afro-Cuban rhythms.
Leaving a Record
Vince has recorded two albums as co-leader of the Vince Norman/Joe McCarthy Big Band and contributed to Grammy-nominated projects. His latest offering, "Sphericality," displays his technical mastery and creative spirit. His unique arrangement of “Giant Steps” is currently being featured on our website at the bottom of this page. If you look at the info on his link in our playlist you will see prolific notes on his thoughts that went into this arrangement. You can purchase his album Sphericality here.

Educating Future Generations
Dedicating himself to local music education, Vince serves as assistant band director at Oklahoma Christian School and adjunct jazz professor at Oklahoma City University. He instills jazz fundamentals in eager students, ensuring the art form continues to thrive.
